Turning 65 Soon? Your Medicare Timeline & Checklist
Summer is officially here! June means longer days, family vacations, backyard BBQs, and making plans for the months ahead. Fun fact: June is named after Juno, the Roman goddess of protection and new beginnings — and if you’re turning 65, Medicare may be one of the biggest new beginnings on your horizon.
At Insurance Benefit Navigators, one of the most common things we hear is:
“I’m turning 65… where do I even start?”
The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone.
If you’ve been following along with our Medicare education series, we’ve already covered:
Medicare basics and mistakes to avoid when turning 65 in our April Agency Insights:

Now let’s talk about timing — because when it comes to Medicare, timing matters!
Here’s your simple Turning 65 Medicare Timeline & Checklist to help you feel prepared and confident.
6 Months Before Turning 65
Start Learning the Basics
You don’t need to make decisions yet — but this is the perfect time to begin understanding Medicare.
Questions to start asking:
✔️What are Medicare Part A & Part B? Will I need additional coverage?
What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans?
What if I’m still working?
This is also a great time to review our previous blog: Avoiding Medicare Mistakes to better understand common pitfalls and enrollment timing.
Pro Tip: The earlier you start learning, the less overwhelming Medicare feels later.
4–5 Months Before Turning 65
Start Comparing Your Medicare Options
This is when things become more personal.
Now is the time to think about:
Your current doctors
- Prescriptions you take
- Travel habits
- Healthcare preferences
- Budget and monthly costs
If you haven’t already, check out our May blog: Understanding Your Medicare Coverage Options to better understand the differences between:
Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans
Part D Prescription Drug Coverage
Remember: there is no one-size-fits-all Medicare plan.
The best plan is the one that works best for YOU.
3 Months Before Turning 65
Your Medicare Enrollment Window Opens
Here’s where timing becomes important.
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins:
3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and extends 3 months after.
That gives you a 7-month enrollment window.
This is typically the best time to:
✅ Apply for Medicare Part A & Part B (if needed)
✅ Review plan options
✅ Compare prescription coverage
✅ Check provider networks
✅ Speak with a licensed Medicare agent
Don’t wait until the last minute! Starting early gives you more time to compare options and avoid unnecessary stress.
During Enrollment
Double Check the Important Stuff
Before selecting a plan, make sure to review:
🩺 Doctors & Specialists
Are your preferred providers in-network?
💊 Prescriptions
Are your medications covered?
🏥 Hospitals & Care Preferences
Do you want flexibility when traveling?
💰 Costs
Look beyond the monthly premium and understand deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket costs.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing a plan too quickly without reviewing the details.
After Enrollment
What Happens Next?
Once enrolled:
✔️ Watch for your Medicare card (if applicable)
✔️ Review plan materials carefully
✔️ Save important documents
✔️ Make note of annual review periods
Your healthcare needs may change over time — which is why reviewing your Medicare coverage each year is important.
The good news? You don’t have to navigate those changes alone.
Common Medicare Timing Mistakes to Avoid
We see these all the time:
❌ Waiting too long to learn about Medicare
❌ Missing enrollment deadlines
❌ Assuming Medicare covers everything automatically
❌ Choosing a plan based only on commercials
❌ Not checking doctors or prescriptions
The earlier you start preparing, the smoother the process becomes.
