November Agency Insights

Open Enrollment Is Here
Make Sure Your Health Coverage Works for You in 2027!

November is here, and so is one of the most important times of the year for health insurance!
Whether you’re shopping for individual or family coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, reviewing your Medicare benefits, or exploring group health insurance options for your small business, now is the perfect time to make sure your coverage is working for you.

At Insurance Benefit Navigators (IBN), we believe choosing health insurance shouldn’t be overwhelming. Our mission is simple: Healthcare Simplified.

Let’s break down what you need to know about Open Enrollment, important deadlines, and how to prepare for 2027.

Marketplace Open Enrollment: November 1 – January 15

Open Enrollment Graphic

If you purchase health insurance for yourself or your family through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace, Open Enrollment officially begins November 1, 2026. This is your annual opportunity to enroll in a new plan, review your current coverage, or make changes for the upcoming year.

Important Marketplace Deadlines

  • November 1, 2026: Open Enrollment begins.
  • December 15, 2026: Last day to enroll for coverage beginning January 1, 2027.
  • January 1, 2027: Coverage begins for those who enrolled by December 15 and paid their first premium.
  • January 15, 2027: Open Enrollment ends.
  • February 1, 2027: Coverage begins for those who enrolled between December 16 and January 15 and paid their first premium.

After Open Enrollment ends, you generally need a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, getting married, or having a baby, to enroll in or change a Marketplace plan.

Why You Should Review Your Coverage Every Year

IBN can help you compare your 2027 Marketplace and make an informed decision.

Even if you love your current health insurance plan, it’s important to review your options before renewing. Health insurance plans can change from year to year, including:

  • Monthly premiums: What you pay each month to maintain coverage.
  • Deductibles and out-of-pocket costs: What you may pay when you actually use your insurance.
  • Provider networks: Whether your preferred doctors, hospitals, and specialists are still covered.
  • Prescription drug coverage: Whether your medications remain covered and what they’ll cost.
  • Financial assistance: Your eligibility for premium tax credits may change based on your projected household income and other factors.

Our advice? Don’t shop based on monthly premiums alone.

A plan with a lower premium may come with a higher deductible, different copays, or a provider network that doesn’t include your preferred doctors. The best plan is one that balances your monthly budget with your healthcare needs.

And remember, don’t assume your current coverage will automatically renew exactly as it is today. Some plans may change or no longer be available, and certain enrollments require action.

Medicare Annual Enrollment: Don’t Miss December 7!

December 7 Calendar page

For our Medicare clients, Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is already underway! Medicare AEP runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, with changes taking effect January 1, 2027.

What Can You Do During Medicare AEP?
• Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
• Change from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage.
• Switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare.
• Join, drop, or change a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

Why an Annual Medicare Review Matters

Your Medicare plan may look familiar, but the benefits and costs can change every year. Before December 7, take time to review:

  • Your plan’s 2027 premiums, deductibles, and copays.
  • Whether your doctors and specialists remain in-network.
  • How your prescription medications will be covered.
  • Changes to dental, vision, hearing, and other supplemental benefits.
  • Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change (ANOC).

Even if you’re happy with your current plan, a quick review can help prevent unexpected expenses in the new year.

If you’re approaching age 65, remember that your initial Medicare enrollment timeline is different from AEP. Our team can help you understand when to enroll and which coverage options may fit your needs.

The Medicare AEP deadline is December 7, so don’t wait until the last minute!

Small Business Owners
Is Your Group Health Insurance Ready for 2027?

Open Enrollment isn’t just important for individuals and Medicare beneficiaries. It’s also a great reminder for business owners to evaluate their employee benefits.

If you own a small business, offering competitive health insurance can be an important part of attracting and retaining great employees.

But with healthcare costs continuing to challenge employers, it’s worth asking: Is your current group health insurance plan still the right fit for your business and your team?

Three Things to Review Before Your Next Group Health Renewal

1. Your renewal increase
If your current group health insurance premium is increasing, don’t assume your only option is to accept the new rate. Depending on your group’s size, eligibility, and health insurance needs, there may be other carriers or plan designs worth exploring.

2. Fully insured vs. level-funded health plans
Many small businesses are familiar with traditional fully insured group health insurance, but level-funded plans may be another option to consider.

Level-funded health insurance combines fixed monthly payments with a funding arrangement tied to the group’s claims experience. Depending on the carrier and plan, eligible businesses may benefit from competitive rates and the possibility of a surplus refund when claims are lower than expected.

However, level-funded plans are not right for every employer. Underwriting, participation requirements, contract terms, and renewal considerations all matter.

3. Employee benefits beyond medical insurance
A competitive benefits package may also include:

• Group dental and vision insurance.
• Employer-paid or voluntary life insurance.
• Short- and long-term disability coverage.
• Accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity insurance.

Offering a thoughtful combination of benefits can help employees feel supported while allowing employers to manage their overall benefits budget.

Did You Know?

Unlike individual Marketplace coverage, small business group health insurance does not necessarily follow the November 1–January 15 Open Enrollment window.

Businesses can often establish new group coverage at different times throughout the year, subject to carrier requirements and eligibility rules. Existing employer plans also have their own renewal dates and employee enrollment periods.

Whether you’re renewing an existing plan, shopping for more competitive rates, or offering employee benefits for the first time, our team can help you evaluate your options.

Looking for small business health insurance? IBN can help you explore traditional group health plans, level-funded options, and supplemental employee benefits.
