A Southern Traditional Recipe:
Hoppin' John for Good Luck

In the South, it’s a long-standing tradition to eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good luck and prosperity. One of the most beloved recipes featuring black-eyed peas is Hoppin’ John—a hearty and flavorful dish that’s perfect for starting the year off right!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried black-eyed peas (or 2 cups cooked)
  • 4 cups broth or water
  • 1 cup long-grain rice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can diced tomatoes or Rotel (optional, for added flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. If using dried peas, soak them overnight, then drain and rinse.
  2. In a large pot, combine black-eyed peas and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour, until peas are tender.
  3. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté onion, bell pepper, and garlic until softened.
  4. Add the sautéed vegetables, rice, and canned tomatoes (if using) to the pot with the black-eyed peas. Cover and cook on low heat until the rice is tender (about 20-25 minutes).
  5. Season with cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper to taste. Serve warm and enjoy!
