Your Annual Benefits Checklist: Preparing for Enrollment Season
The best enrollment decisions aren’t made at the last minute—they’re made with preparation.
Whether you’re enrolled in Medicare, purchase coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, or receive insurance through your employer, taking a little time now can make enrollment season much less stressful and help ensure you choose the coverage that’s right for you and your family.
Enrollment season is one of the busiest times of the year for health insurance, and being prepared before it begins can save time, reduce stress, and help you make more informed decisions.
Rather than waiting until deadlines are approaching, we encourage our clients to start preparing now.
Start With Your Current Coverage
Before reviewing new plans, take a few minutes to think about how well your current coverage has worked over the past year.
Ask yourself:
- Have my healthcare needs changed?
- Did I have unexpected medical expenses?
- Am I happy with my current doctors and specialists?
- Have any of my prescriptions changed?
- Will my family situation be different next year?
The answers to these questions often help determine whether your current plan is still the best fit.
Your Annual Benefits Checklist
A little preparation today can make enrollment much easier later.a
Take a look at what has worked well—and what hasn’t. Think about your healthcare usage over the past year and whether your current plan still meets your needs.
Having an accurate prescription list available will make it much easier to compare plans and ensure your medications remain covered.
Provider networks can change from year to year. Verify that your preferred doctors and healthcare facilities continue to participate in your plan.
Planning for surgeries, specialist visits, new prescriptions, or anticipated medical expenses can help you select coverage that best fits your needs.
If your household size, address, or income has changed, now is the perfect time to gather the information you’ll need during enrollment.
Medicare Annual Enrollment (AEP)
If you’re enrolled in Medicare, Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 through December 7.
During this time, you can review and make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug coverage.
Even if you’re happy with your current plan, it’s important to remember that plans can change each year. Premiums, provider networks, prescription formularies, and copays may all be different for the upcoming plan year.
Reviewing your coverage annually helps ensure your plan continues to meet your healthcare needs and budget.
Marketplace Open Enrollment (OE)
For individuals and families purchasing coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, Open Enrollment begins November 1.
There are two important deadlines to keep in mind:
- November 1 – December 15: Enroll or make plan changes by December 15 for coverage beginning January 1, 2027.
- December 16 – January 15: Enroll or make plan changes during this period for coverage beginning February 1, 2027.
Before enrollment starts, consider:
- Reviewing your estimated household income.
- Updating household information.
- Gathering any documents you may need.
- Reviewing your current doctors and prescriptions.
- Thinking about any expected healthcare needs for the coming year.
Planning ahead helps make the enrollment process smoother and allows more time to compare your options.
Employer Group Health Plans
Enrollment season isn’t just for Medicare beneficiaries and Marketplace consumers.
Many employers also begin reviewing their employee benefits during the fall as they prepare for upcoming renewals.
If you’re a business owner, now is an excellent time to evaluate your current employee benefits strategy, review renewal options, and ensure your benefits package continues to meet the needs of both your business and your employees.
In case you missed it, last month’s Agency Insights explored why employee benefits should be viewed as a year-round strategy—not just something to think about during renewal season. We discussed how the right benefits package can help attract and retain quality employees while supporting the long-term growth of your business.
Why Planning Ahead Matters
One of the biggest mistakes we see each year is waiting until the last minute.
Preparing now allows you to:
- Compare your options carefully.
- Confirm your doctors are in-network.
- Review prescription coverage.
- Understand your benefits before making changes.
- Avoid unnecessary enrollment stress.
Health insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all, and the plan that worked well this year may not be the best fit for next year.
